HONORS and AP (Advanced Placement) courses are offered for students in 6-12th grade. These courses are established with the goal of offering more strenuous and challenging courses that better prepare students for eventual attendance at a higher education institution and or university. Consider the following before voluntarily signing up for a HONORS or AP course:
- The content and method of delivery of the course may be different from a regular class. Content and methods are similar throughout the State. HONORS classes are taken to prepare for the AP classes in high school. College credit may be gained by taking AP classes, depending upon college entrance requirements. The AP tests are sent to us and graded by the AP Placement Services/College Board.
- The rules of the classroom are essentially the same as those at a University.
o HONORS and AP classes are set up like college courses. There is a “zero tolerance” for late work other than extenuating circumstances.
o Behavioral standards are higher and less tolerant of off-task behavior, and a student may be removed from the class in accordance with 37.002 of the Education Code.
- Reading and essay requirements are greater which may require more study time at home. - Science lab work may be more difficult and may require greater knowledge of math.
- The pace of math classes will be faster and re-teach tutorials will be done either before or after school. - We change classes during the first ten days of the semester for regular courses. HONORS and AP schedule changes may be made after the first grading cycle, with principal and counselor approval if a student is failing.
- Students may ask for one eligibility waiver during the year for failure in an HONORS or AP class for athletic or academic UIL purposes. (See the principal for more information concerning the waiver).
- There is a fee for AP exams taken during the Junior and Senior school years. Information regarding the fees will be conveyed to the student at the beginning of the second semester.
- Academic Honesty SHALL be upheld by ALL students. In an HONORS/AP class, the student(s) may be removed from the course and transferred to a regular section of the course.
Students must pass the previous grade level course prior to entering an HONORS/AP course.
A passing grade on previous STAAR scores is recommended, but a student can attempt to take the HONORS/AP course. Students will receive advising from the counselor and principal regarding this agreement.
Students volunteer to be in these HONORS/AP classes and voluntarily agree to the course requirements, as deemed necessary by the HONORS/AP district committee.
